The equal sign is the universal symbol for equality. Its inclusion in the Bondi Memorial serves to highlight the sense of inequality many victims and survivors experienced in the 1980s and 1990s. Many of the acts of violence that happened took place at a time of great unequal rights, when LGBTQ people were marginalised, discriminated against and subjected to hate and prejudice.
